Using a search engine, a person can search anything on the Internet and find any related web pages, images, videos, maps or related things. When this person wrote a word or phrase in search box, the results are listed according to their ranks from the most popular one to the least popular one.

There are many search engines nowadays as the Internet became popular and search engines brought organization. Search engines allow you find the necessary information correctly, quickly and in a short time. That is the very basic reason of launching search engines.

History of Search Engines

The very first search engine like system was created by a university student in the year 1990. the name of it was Archie and the student was Alan Emtage. The goal of this system was finding the files that people look for. This is the origin point of search engines.

After this very basic search engine, some other search engines or search engine systems were launched. Veronica and Jughead are just two examples of the very first search engines in search engines history. Every step meant development and search engines technology improved very fast. For indexing, new ways were used. JumpStation and Webcrawler are two important search engines. They brought full text searching technology.

Years and developments brought some other search engines such as Magellan, AltaVista, Northern Line and of course the biggest search engine Yahoo and Google. Yahoo was launched by David Filo and Jerry Yang. Search engines became popular especially after the end of 1990s. Google is the greatest step for the search engines history. Google was launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. As Google became more and more popular, new technologies were added to this search engine such as page ranking, search button, mail, book search, map and some other features.

A search engine follows some series of actions to work. These are web crawling, indexing and searching. The search engine visits the web sites following the links that they give to each other. The content is kept and the indexed content is shown in the results. This is the simple explanation of how a search engine works.
